How tankless water heaters work

Back to our professional Toronto plumbers website for tankless in Toronto.

Tankless water heaters work on demand – they only heat water when needed. When The the need for hot water is required by an appliance, the heater will sense the demand and heat water instantly. Tankless water heaters continuously heat the water through a water heat exchanger. Instead of wasting energy and money constantly reheating and storing water when not needed, tankless water heaters provide only as much hot water as needed.

Q Allan, Can you explain the difference between a regular water heater ( the one with a tank ) and the new tankless type heater ?

A: Typical Tank water heaters store and heat water 24 HRS /7 incurring higher operating costs, on the other side tankless water heaters only heat water when needed. Also, tank heaters have a limited supply of hot water and will run out of hot water but tankless heaters provide an unlimited supply of hot water so you will never be without water when needed.
Q Allan, how big is a tankless heater?

The residential tankless heater is about the size of a carry on suitcase and can be installed virtually anywhere inside or outside. This will allow you to reclaim valuable space in your home.

Q: How much money can be saved if a Noritz tankless water heater is used in place of a storage tank?

A: The California Energy Commission estimates that a water heater uses approximately 25% of all energy consumed by any household. Using a Noritz tankless water heater will allow a home to use up to 50% less energy for water heating, which can save hundreds of dollars per year.

Q: Which Noritz tankless water heater model is right for my application?

A: The best way to size a tankless water heater for any application is to estimate the peak flow capacity that will need to be supplied by the water heater at any time. For residential use, this will most likely be the maximum number of showers that may be used simultaneously, multiplied by the flow rate of the showerheads. This calculation should only be done by a qualified plumber or contractor. Once this maximum flow rate is calculated, consult the specifications for each heater to determine which model meets your demand. Please consult with your plumber or contractor, or inquire with Noritz for commercial application sizing.

Q: How long do tankless water heaters last?

A: Tankless water heaters can last 20 or more years, which is 2-3 times longer than a traditional tank heater. They are extremely reliable as Noritz units are manufactured with the highest quality parts and put through very rigorous testing and quality control.

Controlling the Heater

Q: At what temperature should the water heater be set?

A: The set temperature of the water heater depends on how it will be used. A comfortable shower temperature should not be much higher than 105°F (temperatures above 125°F are scalding). Lower temperatures will also prevent scale deposits from forming, which may affect the operation of the heater.

Q: How do I change the temperature on the water heater?

A: Every Noritz tankless water heater comes standard with a remote digital temperature controller, which allows you to adjust the water temperature. The controller is optional with the N-063S model. For other models, the control panel can be wired and installed in a remote location; up to 300 feet away from the unit. The water temperature is displayed on the easy-to-use control panel, and can be adjusted using the up and down buttons.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance

Q: There isn't enough water pressure from the heater.

A: If the pressure being supplied into the water heater is low, the pressure coming out of the water heater will also be low. If the supply pressure is normal and the water pressure is still low, the water heater may be too small for your application. Contact your authorized installer about replacing your heater with a larger one.

Q: Water is dripping from the relief valve on the outlet of the heater.

A: This may be a failure of the relief valve, or a response to dangerously high temperatures or pressures in the water heater. Contact a plumber to have this problem checked.

Q: There is a number flashing on the control panel.

A: When the temperature is set to 125°F or higher, that temperature will flash on the control panel display for the first ten seconds. If the number continues to flash a 2-digit error code after ten seconds, or if there is no number displayed, contact a plumber for service.
